DECORATING A STORE FOR CHRISTMAS

Halloween has passed and here in Canada our Thanksgiving was in October so it is straight on to Christmas now. As Peter Pan would say "second star to the right and straight on til morning."

GOOD NEWS AND BAD ...

I am not doing any markets this season as it is physically too demanding,

but that does give me room to shop the markets, time to help decorate TPH,

and focus on writing some much needed tutorials for the blog. Don`t forget to check out the

Me and all the ladies at The Passionate Home spent 2 days behind locked doors and brown paper

moving furniture, unpacking ornaments, setting up Christmas trees, untangling lights,

sweeping and dusting, all to transform the store for Christmas.

listen to the wonderful music playing in the store,

let the ladies know they did a great job.

Pallet Shelf Countless Options for Decor

Since everyone knows pallets now, people tend to make furniture for their house out of pallets. Instead of buying the furniture from the market, they prefer to be creative and spend sometime making it by themselves. You just need to know the right guidelines to make the pallet shelf. You can make the pallet shelf easily by attaching the pallets together in any shape. It depends how big you need, you can make as many as shelves you want. Pallets can be found anywhere free or if not you would be able to find them in home depot for a very low cost.

People love pallet shelves in their house so that they can put decoration pieces in their house to make their house look elegant. You can also put frames on pallet shelf. Make sure to hang it tightly with the screws so that it does not fall down. Pallet shelves can be very convenient and you can even clean them eventually with Clorox to make them look clean. It is a great way to make your house look good with your own creations. You can also color the pallet shelves or wood polish it so that it does not look old.

A Female For The Dovetail Plane

In the sliding dovetail joint the two elements, male and female slide one into another. The resulting joint is very strong and it is most used when vertical and horizontal parts have to offer more resistance to the traction (the shelves in a bookcase, for example).

The traditional way for this joint needs three tools: saw, chisel and router plane.

Another option is to use dedicate planes, but while for the male element the choice is wide, for the female part of the joint the specialized planes are rare. Japanese tools, instead, have a Ari-Kake-Shakuri-Kanna for this purpose, a grooving plane needing a separate angled fence for its job.

As this joint is mostly cut across the grain, it is necessary scoring the wooden fibers before.

The plane for cutting the female element is a sort of dado plane, indeed, only with angled sole and skewed blade.

Finally I decided to make a self made one and here is the result:

FDT means "Female Dovetail" and 6 is the blade width (6 mm)

The blade is skewed at 20° and the sole is inclined at 78°, the same of male cutting plane. The blade is bedded at 50°.

It has an adjustable depth stop and a double spur for cross grain cuts.

The woods are beech for the body, mahogany for sole and wedges.

The body building is quite simple. I cut a rabbet for the 6 mm bottom part.

I cut rooms for blades and wedges and glued a piece of mahogany to the bottom.

I planed the sole at 78°, controlling the correspondence with the male element.

The critical part of the job is to find the exact correspondences between angled sole and skewed blade and wedge.

For the blade I used an old plane iron, for the nickers a 10 mm spade bit, grinded ad hoc.

Then the side is closed by a piece of beech; it creates the slots for blades and wedges.

The finish is shellac and wax.

The plane is able to cut grooves of which minimal width must be inferior to blade width; in practice is better that such measure was at least 3-4 mm more.

The cut is carried out in two parts (or more, if the dovetail is larger), the last one in opposite direction.

Here is the on the road test:

Cut the male and trace two parallel lines at a distance corresponding to minor width dovetail point. This is the only tracing requested:

The router plane has really a poor job to do:

In this case I cut beech wood; it will be interesting to observe the plane working on harder woods. Surely, the tool can be improved by a better quality blade. I did only few cuts but I learned that is convenient to keep the groove closer (- 1mm) and finally adjust the male by few other shots.....plane shots of course!

With that, the following pics show some of the design features I mentioned. Perfect for on-site work holding applications.

First off is the detachable shooting board on the lid, very handy indeed.

Next are a series of 3/4" holes that can be used with dowels or what I use is a Surface Clamp. Lee Valley carries this clamp and youll never regret purchasing one.

With the three holes, a surface clamp and a small dowel, you can hold down a workpiece on the toolbox lid, use the front clamp holes for jointing edges, or cut some dovetails in the vertical position which is easy to do thanks to the small shelf at the bottom.

Line up the edge of the workpiece with the side of the shelf and you know your piece is plumb.
The back of the chest has a small shelf for laying those screws and nails in when on site as well as the option of more tool storage. I keep two back saws, two cam-clamps (used on site to hold the chest down to a flat surface while working)a small level and an engineers square. On the inside, between the tool till and large bottom section I can carry my must-have workshop essential tools. Youll see specifically what that includes on my new DVD, A Beginners Guide to Workshop Essentials, which is included free with every book order!
